About The Author

Bryan Kolb

Bryan Kolb

Dr. Bryan Kolb got his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and conducted postdoctoral work at the University of Western Ontario and the Montreal Neurological Institute. He relocated to the University of Lethbridge in 1976, where he teaches neurology. His current work looks at how preconception and perinatal events affect the developing cerebral cortex, such as tactile stimulation, psychoactive medications, stress, noise, and injury, and how these changes are connected to behavior. The CPA and CSBBCS awarded him the Hebb Prize, and is currently a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's Child Brain Development program. The University of British Columbia, Thompson Rivers University, Concordia University, and the University of Lethbridge awarded him honorary doctorates. He has been awarded the University of Lethbridge's Distinguished Teaching Medal and the Ingrid Speaker Gold Medal for research.

He relocated to the University of Calgary in 1992, where he is a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. His current research program examines the motor cortex's development, organization, and plasticity and how seizures alter brain function. Professor Teskey has won numerous teaching awards, developed new courses, and co-created the Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience program at his home University.

Ian Q. Whishaw

From the great authors Ian Whishaw, Bryan Kolb, and G. Campbell Teskey, An Introduction to Brain and Behavior, 5th edition (ePub/PDF) offers a unique inquiry-based approach to behavioral neuroscience with every chapter focusing on a central question (i.e., “How Does the Nervous System Function?”). The authors emphasize a distinctive clinical perspective, with examples that show college students what happens when common neuronal processes malfunction.

The new 5th edition continues the Brain and Behavior tradition of incorporating the latest research throughout the ebook. Revisions include new material discussing current research on genetic mosaics and modification, including optogenetic techniques and transgenic techniques, hormones, brain development in adolescence, neurotransmitters, color perception, psychobiotics, and biorhythms, as well as updates to the discussion of specific disorders to reflect the current state of understanding, including Parkinson’s disease, depression, and drug dependency, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, glaucoma, sleep disorders, and abnormal development related to prenatal experience.
