About The Author

David Shier

David Shier

Professor David Shier has more than 30 years of experience teaching anatomy and physiology, primarily to nursing, premedical, dental, and allied health students. David has effectively incorporated his extensive teaching expertise into another student-friendly revision of Hole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology and Hole’s Human Anatomy and Physiology (both available on this site). His interest in physiology and teaching started with a job as a research assistant at Harvard Medical School from 1976-1979. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in '84, and served on the faculty of the Medical College of Ohio from 1985-1989. He started teaching at Washtenaw Community College in '90. Dr. Shier has recent experience in on-line course delivery, including recording lectures for so-called “flipped” lecture rooms. He has also been in the relationship between pedagogy and assessment, and the use of tools traditionally associated with evaluation (e.g. lab quizzes) as pedagogical tools, often related to group activities.

Jackie Butler

Jackie Butler

Dr. Jackie Butler’s professional background includes work at the University of Texas Health Science Center conducting research concerning the genetics of bilateral retinoblastoma. Jackie later worked at Houston’s M. D. Anderson Hospital investigating remission in leukemia patients. A well-liked educator for more than thirty years at Grayson College, she has taught microbiology and human anatomy and physiology for health science majors. Dr. Butler's experience and work with college students of various academic backgrounds have contributed significantly to another revision of Hole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology and Hole’s Human Anatomy and Physiology. Jackie Butler acquired her M.S. and B.S. degrees from Texas A&M University, specializing in microbiology, including courses in epidemiology and immunology.

Ricki Lewis

Ricki Lewis

Dr. Ricki Lewis’s career in communicating science began with earning a Ph.D. in Genetics from Indiana University in 1980. It quickly blossomed into writing for magazines and newspapers and writing the introductory textbook Life. Since then, Rickie has taught a variety of life science courses and has authored the textbook Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications and books about stem cells, gene therapy, and scientific discovery. She is a genetic counselor for a large medical practice, teaches a graduate online course in "Genethics" at Albany Medical College, and writes for Genetic Literacy Project, Medscape Medical News, Rare Disease Report, and medical journals. Ricki also writes the popular DNA Science blog at the Public Library of Science and is a frequent public speaker.

Holes Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology 13th Edition
